Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
