Around fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Police say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then discovered numerous other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests indicate the substance was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; authorities are presently not aware of any physical harm in association with the incident," they commented.
City officials announced they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking representative commented the incident left him without words and required to be addressed quickly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
