The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had let in a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, before he admitted that the management had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were facing for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Roman club appeared equally disorganized in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their first five games, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if they are improving or collapsing.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback
At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this year. He was on the last one at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."
Discovering His True Position
Perhaps the manager was persistently working to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
