Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
